What's Halloween Like in Copenhagen?

Halloween isn’t as big in Denmark as it is in some other countries. However, it is growing in popularity due to global pop culture. Television and movies from America definitely plays a part in the younger generation of Danes celebrating Halloween activities. One of the best places to see that for yourself is the annual Fall make over of Tivoli Halloween. 

What's Tivoli Gardens?

Tivoli is a must-see Copenhagen attraction. If you do nothing else in Copenhagen, it should be Tivoli Gardens. This goes for any time of the year, although there is something special in Tivoli Gardens no matter when you decide to visit. Just like how there’s no bad time to visit Copenhagen, there is no bad time to visit Tivoli Gardens. 

Tivoli is an urban amusement park and gardens in the center of Copenhagen. It sit in the shadow of City Hall and Copenhagen Central Station. It’s almost by magic that they were able to construct Tivoli. It’s an amusement park in the city center of a European capital – but Tivoli is magical. It was even the inspiration for Walt Disney to create Disneyland in America.

The autumn days get shorter, but Tivoli is long on fun. They go above and beyond to decorate for each season. Here’s a guide on what to expect in the fall, Tivoli Halloween season.

Tivoli Halloween features some amazing Fall decorations. It’s also decorated in a way that the whole family will love- nothing too scary. There are festive fall crafts and spooky Halloween decorations for sale by vendors all over Tivoli. They host a contest to find Denmark’s biggest pumpkin each year and display the finalists on the lawn in front of the iconic Nimb Hotel. The whole family will also enjoy the Halloween Illuminations light show. You can catch it hourly from 19.30-22.30 Sunday through Thursday with a bonus show at 22.30 on Friday and Saturday. It’s held at Tivoli lake, like the Summer Illuminations show.

The biggest reason to visit Tivoli at Halloween is the decorations. The light affects, the scare crows with jack-o-lantern heads – it’s beautiful. Throughout the park, Tivoli Gardens plants an additional 10,700 plants and uses over 2,000 bales of straw for decor. It’s something that will immediately put you in an autumn mood.

It’s not all scary zombies and spooky haunted houses – Tivoli Halloween is kid-friendly. There are extra fall rides added like the friendly ghost train, mushroom house, swing carousel and witch carousel. The kids’s section has hourly shows put on by mascot, Rasmus Klump from 14.00-17.00. You can find him at The Open Air Stage. Kids will also have the chance to trick or treat between the Halloween stalls from 11.00-18.00 on 28-31 October.

Scary Tivoli Halloween Attractions

There’s still something at Tivoli Halloween for the big kids and adults who want to be scared. The biggest, newest and scariest attraction is The Hospital – a creepy haunted experience built under the Roller Coaster. It’s an innocent-looking hospital, but those who enter find something very different. If you’re brave enough to enter, it will cost 60 kr. (about 9 USD). It’s not included with the unlimited rides pass, but worth checking out!

You’ll also notice that several rides have Halloween reboots, like the withes brooms added to the tall swing ride. If you want something scarier, visit the park on Saturday 26, October. That’s the evening of Monsters Night Out. There will be a scary parade of zombies, monsters and ghouls and you can dress up to fit in. Also look for the Zombie Snap station around the park. You can take a picture on them and have a zombie join you if you download the Tivoli app. 

Hours and Ticket Information

Tivoli Halloween 2019 is open from 11 October through 3 November. Their hours are from 11.00-23.00 Sunday through Thursday and they are open an extra hour, until midnight, on Fridays and Saturdays.
